PMD alerts of a heatwave as temperatures rise

On Sunday, many of Pakistan’s southern districts experienced heatwave conditions, with temperatures in Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Larkana, and Dadu in Sindh ascending significantly.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted that majority of the country would experience extreme heatwave conditions starting Monday, with temperatures in Sindh reaching as high as 46 to 48 degrees Celsius.
The southern half of the country, including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, will experience extreme heat till April 18 due to a high-pressure system that is expected to form over the upper sky starting on Sunday.

Temperatures in these regions are expected to stay 6 to 8 degrees Celsius warmer than usual during the day. During this time, temperatures in the country’s central and northern regions—Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan—will rise by 4 to 6 degrees.

It is also anticipated that nights will continue to be unusually warm.

The heat could cause windstorms and dust storms, the Met Office warned. The public has been encouraged by authorities to stay indoors during peak hours, stay hydrated, and avoid direct sunlight, especially for women, children, and the elderly.

Climate change has been accused by scientists for the early onset of hot summer weather in South Asia, putting more than a billion people in the region at danger of illnesses caused by heat.
