As of February 3, 2025, numerous WhatsApp users in Saudi Arabia have reported the activation of voice and video calling features, which had been restricted in the kingdom for several years.

Despite these reports, there has been no official confirmation from either the Saudi government or WhatsApp regarding this change. It remains uncertain whether this activation is a permanent policy shift or a temporary test.

In March 2024, similar rumors emerged about the lifting of the ban on WhatsApp calls, but the Communications, Space and Technology Commission of Saudi Arabia dismissed these claims, reaffirming that the restrictions remained in place.

Technology expert Abdullah Al-Subaie suggests that this development aligns with Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to enhance its telecommunications and digital infrastructure, potentially improving communication services for users within the country.

WhatsApp introduced voice calls in 2015 and video calls in 2016. However, these features were blocked in Saudi Arabia due to regulatory policies.

While there have been occasional reports of brief activations in the past, they were typically linked to technical updates rather than official policy changes.

If this current activation proves to be permanent, it would mark a significant improvement in connectivity within the kingdom, benefiting both residents and expatriates who rely on WhatsApp for communication.
