Electricity Price to Hit Almost Rs. 50 Per Unit as NEPRA Proposes New Hike

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has yet another requirement that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has planned to fulfil by increasing the base electricity cost by Rs. 4.96 per unit.

After the fedearl cabinet has approved the decision, the power regulator is anticipated to make the official announcement. The proposed rise is subject to IMF-imposed constraints, but NEPRA is still debating whether it should be implemented all at once or gradually.

The national average base rate would increase from its present level of Rs. 24.82 per unit to roughly Rs. 30 per unit if the plan were to be accepted by the federal cabinet.

However, the cost per unit will increase to Rs. 50 after GST and other levies are applied to the new base pricing. Once the cabinet has given its permission, the price increase will likely be disclosed by notification.
