Najam Sethi, the chairman of the PCB management committee, stated that Shahid Afridi’s brief selection committee initially sought Babar Azam as Pakistan’s captain.
For the home series against New Zealand earlier this year, the PCB Management Committee selected former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi as the temporary chair of the Men’s National Selection Committee. Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar Anjum were both on the panel, and Haroon Rashid (a member of the management committee) served as the convener.
Speaking to a YouTube channel, Sethi claimed that the selectors ultimately opted to stick with Babar as captain.
“I say it again and again. Like this one [changing the captain], I don’t make these decisions by myself. I depend on the opinions of people I trust, said Sethi.
“When we took over, we created an interim selection committee. They informed us that a few modifications would be necessary and that Babar should be removed as captain before the selectors boarded. But as soon as they were made selectors, they declared that Babar didn’t need to be changed. I told them that it’s okay to alter their views, and he added.
Afridi left his position after the New Zealand series because there wasn’t sufficient time for meetings.
Afridi was later replaced as the Chair of the Men’s National Selection Committee by Haroon Rashid, who was selected by PCB.
